ALLEGHANY COUNTY LIBRARY EVENTS All these programs are free of charge and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend! Here is the link for this Friday night's Blue Ridge Read program "The River Keeper" with Sarah Martin Byrd. Mrs. Byrd did a wonderful program for us and her book was fabulous. Her program was very informative about the New River and plans for the dam. https://youtu.be/05X6KJcy0TA Also please mark your calendars for the following events: On Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 am-1 pm, Author, Michael Almond will be sharing about his new book, "The Tannery," hot off the press, which is a historical murder mystery set in Wilkes County. Local and area authors are invited to set up and showcase their books at the event. Contact the library for more info or to reserve your spot. On Thursday, Oct. 21, at 2 pm, the Library will host "An Afternoon of Poetry" with Phillip Shabazz'. This is sponsored by the Alleghany Arts Council. Then Thursday, Nov. 4, from noon-1:30 pm, author Edward Di Gangi will share about a son's search - a mother's journey as he searched for his birth mother. Learn about his book "The Gift Best Given"during this Lunch 'n Learn. Bring your lunch; the library will provide drinks and dessert. PHIPPS GENERAL STORE MUSIC JAM Friday nights, 7-10 pm, at 2425 Silas Creek Rd., Lansing, NC. Old-time, bluegrass and mountain music. No charge to get in and coffee is free. A great place to share some tunes or learn some new ones! We do ask pickers to play songs in the public domain. ASTA MONTHLY HIKE Sunday, Oct. 17, at 1 pm. Join the fun and see the autumn leaves! We will hike the last Eastern leg of MST in Alleghany County, starting at Devil's Garden Overlook (Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 235.7), travel to the Sparta Trail and on out to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 234 and Mahogany Rock Rd. This hike is approx. 3 miles long with little elevation change. If you are looking for a longer hike, you can do the 6 mile out and back!
